Sunscreen checklist

***content source: http://blogs.babycenter.com/products_and_prizes/your-1-sunscreen-checklist-giveaways/

1. Look for UVA/UVB protection.
Surprisingly, SPF does not address UVA—long-wave ultraviolet rays—only UBV or “shortwave” rays. Look for a sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection to make sure your family is getting maximum protection. Once you’ve covered both UV rays, choose at least a 30+ SPF and make sure to follow the application instructions on the label to ensure you’re putting enough on.  Also, don’t forget to reapply throughout the day!

2. Don’t put all your trust in baby sunscreens.
Products formulated for babies are usually the safest options for their delicate, sensitive skin, but sunscreen is sometimes an exception. Many baby sunscreens contain oxybenzone, which is on Healthy Child’s watch list, so check your back-of-bottle labels—no matter what cute picture is on the front.

3. Skip the vitamin A.
Yes, we’re fans of vitamins, but as mentioned, Vitamin A and sun don’t mix. Cover up with hats and shades instead!

4. Avoid spray sunscreens.
They are super convenient, but sprays can put your family at risk for inhaling potentially toxic sunscreen particles. To avoid inhaling, spray on your hands and apply it as you would sunscreen lotion.

5. Opt for waterproof.
If you spend a lot of time in the water, buy a waterproof sunscreen and re-apply every 45 minutes to 2 hours for the best coverage.
